Today Sibongile Khumalo stands tall as a celebrated mezzo-soprano in her native South Africa, where she is hailed as the Empress of Song. “As a little girl growing up in Soweto, I was surrounded by music, so I presume it was inevitable that I would end up with music in my world,” she says humbly.
Her voice has become a national treasure and is instantly recognizable, and her spirited nature sets her apart from her contemporaries.
When she turned 50 in 2007 Khumalo filled the SABC recording auditorium with family, friends and fans for a night of celebration. The result is a 13 track album of music written by the likes of Allen Kwela, Victor Ntoni, Welcome Duru and Glen Mafoko. She also threw in later compositions from the late 70s and 80s by Hugh Masekela and Caiphus Semenya. The album is co-produced by Khumalo and Victor Masondo.
An intoxicating evening of indulgence that is punctuated with anecdotes relating to the songs she performs - and a generous dose of sharp wit, the experience is a journey back into time.
Khumalo continues to sing and perform and with Live, she proves once more just who the diva is. All hail the Empress of Song!
