The Trip - 3.45 Formed in 1952 by former Dizzy Gillespie sidemen John Lewis and Milt Jackson, the Modern Jazz Quartet’s line up was set by 1955 with bassist Percy Heath and drummer Connie Kay. In 1956 they signed to Atlantic for an association that would last their lifetimes. Spanning the years 1956-1988, this anthology is packed with music to be enjoyed, whether the raw material be Lewis’ or Jackson’s own originals, Broadway standards or classical compositions. Few groups in the history of jazz can claim such consistency and longevity of genuine inspiration. Few boast a back-catalogue of the quality of the Modern Jazz Quartet. This two-CD set includes selections from landmark albums like Pyramid, Fontessa and Blues On Bach, some of their very best live performances , from the Music Inn recordings of the 1950s to the Last Concert of 1974, as well as three bonus tracks from the Plastic Dreams sessions. Featuring liner notes by jazz writer Kevin Le Gendre.

"This might have been a band known for its formality and precision, but it could swing like a wild thing and goodly number of chances were taken - it's just that they were taken so suavely!" The Jazz Breakfast Online
