The Way Up

Pat Metheny

24 January 2005

The Way Up represents, in the words of guitarist Pat Metheny himself, "our most ambitious undertaking ever as a group" - a single, brilliant 68-minute piece composed by Metheny and his collaborator of 28 years, keyboardist Lyle Mays.  It was recorded in Manhattan with long-time bassist Steve Rodby; recent PMG additions drummer Antonio Sanchez and trumpeter Cuong Vu; and newly recruited harmonica player Gregoire Maret, who'd previously performed with Cassandra Wilson.  Metheny declares, "We have never been so excited about a project.  The album is a milestone achievement for Metheny historically as well as artistically.  It marks his debut as part of the Nonesuch roster and his 30th year as a recording artist.
