The Common Ground

A seminal figure in the New York Jazz scene of the 1960s and 1970s, the flautist’s quest for authenticity led him to many corners of the musical world.  Recorded in 1960 after an extensive tour of Africa, The Common Ground features an unusual choice of instruments played by a superlative team including Ray Barretto, Ray Mantilla and Michael Olatunji, as well as a vocal contribution from poet Maya Angelou, with no concession to exotica.
