Charles Lloyd

23 January 2006

In early 1966 saxophonist Charles Lloyd gathered around him some of the most adventurous musicians of his generation pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Cecil McBee (replaced by Ron McLure the following year) and drummer Jack DeJohnette.Hailed by Billboard as 'the first psychedelic jazz group', the Charles Lloyd Quartet were one of the most popular jazz outfits of the late 1960s.Featuring the brilliant 'Sombrero Sam', later covered by Kool & The Gang, this live set from the 1969 MontereyJazz Festival captures the quartet at their very best, just before Miles Davis, ever hip to happening young voices, recruited Jarrett and DeJohnette.
