Porgy and Bess

30 November 2002

By the time Porgy And Bess was issued in 1966 there were already 15 MJQ albums in the Atlantic catalogue.  Formed in 1952 by former Dizzy Gillespie sidemen John Lewis and Milt Jackson, the Modern Jazz Quartet’s line up was set by 1955 with bassist Percy Heath and drummer Connie Kay.  The album’s repertoire was a set played live prior to the recording, and it continued to be a club and concert staple thereafter. It was the first time the group had taped an entire album of another composer’s music, and as can be heard in this overdue reissue, this is a classic rendition of a classic.
