No female singer in South African history holds as much respect as the legendary Miriam Makeba.
A year ago, she embarked on a farewell tour across the globe, saying goodbye to the millions of fans that have made her life such a remarkable one.
As vibrant and feisty as she was back in the 1950's, when her career took off, she once again wowed audiences worldwide.
Sadly, on the evening of Sunday, 9th November 2008, she gave her last performance. Miriam collapsed from a cardiac arrest during a performance in Italy, at a benefit concert against organised crime. She was rushed to hospital but announced dead shortly thereafter. Miriam chose to not go quietly, and at the age of 75 she died doing what she loves best. She had been on stage for a mere half an hour when her heart gave in.
This drive for life has seen her live a life that only movies are made of.
Created jointly by Gallo and the Makeba Trust, this beautiful compilation outlines her career in 38 well-chosen gems from her extensive catalogue, from her early days with the Skylarks and Manhattan Brothers to the end of her career, and includes a collaboration with Nina Simone.
