Jazz Cuba - Irakere

26 March 2007
Irakere featured some of the most important musicians in Cuba, such as Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo Sandoval and, of course, its creator-conductor, Chucho Valdes. Although Irakere made multitudes of people dance, it also served as a melting pot of risky musical ideas... jazz ideas. The name of the group comes from the Yoruba language. Irakere means at the same time vegetation and whip. The background to the group can be found in the combo of Chucho Valdes (1964) and in the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna (1967), to which almost all its founders belonged. Line up Chucho Valdes, piano, Paquito D'Rivera (sax & clarinet); Jorge Varona, Arturo Sandoval (trumpets); Carlos Averhoff (tenor sax); Carlos Emilio Morales (electric guitar); Carlos del Puerto (bass); Enrique Pla (drums); Oscar Valdes, Armando Cuervo; Carlos Barbon, Jorge Alfonso (percussion). Recorded in 1970
