David Newman

27 October 2003
Saxophonist David Newman made his name working as a sideman for Ray Charles between 1954 and 1964, and recorded various sides for Atlantic throughout the ‘60s.  This recording debut as a leader from 1959 features Ray Charles on piano, along with Hank Crawford (here called Bennie Crawford) on baritone, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, bassist Edgar Willis and drummer Milton Turner.  The reissue includes a foreword by Atlantic producer Joel Dorn and new liner notes by award-winning writer David Ritz.
