Dexter Gordon - American Classic

Dexter Gordon

04 April 2010

One of bebop's major exponents, tenor saxophonist and jazz great Dexter Gordon, having learned his lessons in the bands of Lionel Hampton, Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker back in the 1940s, became a key member of the Blue Note label in the decades that followed, recording landmark albums way into the 1960s. Although his career was subsequently marked by moments of silence, by the time he recorded American Classic for the Elektra Musicians label in 1982, he showed further proof of his later career's sparkle. Boasting organist Shirley Scott and saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr as special guests and drummer Eddie Gladden, bassist David Eubanks and pianist Kirk Lightsey, this 'in and out of the 'tradition' album is proof positive that the virtues of bebop, the blues, and, as Gordon himself states in the brief interview that bookends this re-issue, a love of playing the changes of 'I Got Rhythm', could still yield music that had a vitality and romanticism integral to the jazz aesthetic. Just four years later, Gordon would graduate to the big screen to play the lead in Bertrand Tavernier's Round Midnight, a French film that is also something of an American classic. TRACKLISTING 1.
