Vadim Repin boxset is Reissue of the Month in Classic FM Magazine

In the October issue of Classic FM Magazine, Julian Haylock picks out the amazing budget-priced 10 CD boxset of Vadim Repin’s recordings as Reissue of the Month calling it ‘unmissable’ and awarding it 5-stars. Once described by Yehudi Menuhin as “simply the best, the most perfect violinist I have ever heard”, this retrospective brings together showpieces such as Ravel’s fiendish Tzigane and popular works like the Violin Concertos of Tchaikovksy and Sibelius, Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto and Mozart’s Violin Concertos 2, 3 & 5, as well as works from lesser known areas of the violin repertoire including Richard Strauss’s Violin Sonata, Stravinsky’s Divertimento and a disc of sonatas by Russian composer (and colleague of Rachmaninov) Nikolay Medtner. Haylock also picks out the 11 CD survey of recordings by Il Giardino Armonico (5-stars) ‘whose theatrical flair and sheer pizzazz never ceases to amaze’ and the 6 CD Hélène Grimaud collection (4-stars) with its ‘arrestingly volatile Brahms’ and Rachmaninov’s Corelli Variations ‘which Grimaud voices to magical effect’.
