Nikolai Lugansky shines in Bournemouth concert

The Finnish conductor Petri Sakari conducted Marin Alsop’s Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for a series of concerts in the UK earlier this week. Warner Classics artist Nikolai Lugansky joined them as soloist in Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and stunned audiences and critics alike. Geoffrey Norris of the Daily Telegraph summed the evening up in his review’s opening paragraph: ‘Driving a hundred miles to hear Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto might seem a bit unnecessary. It is scarcely the rarest work in the repertoire. But the runes were especially propitious for this performance, and they proved to be spot on in predicting something special.’ For the full review, see www.telegraph.co.uk. Nikolai Lugansky’s recordings of all the Rachmaninov Piano Concertos, with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo, are available on Warner Classics.
