Nikolai Lugansky records Rachmaninov in Birmingham

4th January 2005: Nikolai Lugansky is in Birmingham this week to record Rachmaninov Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 4 with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo completing the cycle. Piano Concertos 1 and 3 (0927 47941-2) were internationally acclaimed, the Gramophone said, 'There is a striking sense of rhapsody and improvisation in his opening solo in the First Concerto's Andante and his leggiere ascent to the starry climax is given with an exceptional delicacy', while The Daily Telegraph stated, 'Nikolai Lugansky's authority in Rachmaninov's music, as exemplified in a recent London recital and in previous recordings of the solo piano works, is further underlined in this impressive pairing of the First and Third Concertos'. Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini plus the Corelli and Chopin Variations (2564-60613-2), released in autumn 2004, garnered more great reviews including 5-starsBBC Music Magazine and CD of the Week in The Observer. Lugansky's recording of Rachmaninov's Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 4 will be released in spring 2005.
