France Honours Susan Graham

In June 2005 the Grammy® Award-winning American mezzo-soprano Susan Graham was awarded France’s highest cultural honour. During a private ceremony in Paris, the Musée du Louvre’s directeur général Didier Selles presented Ms. Graham the medal of the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters. Originally awarded the medal of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2001, Ms. Graham received the elevation to Commander in recognition of her continuing contribution to French music through recordings and performances of French song and opera, in addition to charitable work she has performed on behalf of the Louvre Museum in Paris. France’s Order of Arts and Letters was established in 1957 to recognize notable artists and writers, and those who have contributed significantly to furthering the arts in France and throughout the world. American recipients of the medal of the Order of arts and Letters include, among others, Paul Auster, Ornette Coleman, Marilyn Horne, Richard Meier, Robert Paxton, Robert Redford, Ned Rorem, and Meryl Streep.
