Ray Charles is a music legend beyond compare. A ten-time Grammy award-winning superstar who almost single-handedly laid the groundwork for soul music, Charles proved his mastery with countless jazz, country, R&B, and pop masterpieces as well, during a career that spanned seven decades. His remarkable life was celebrated in the 2004 biopic Ray – featuring Jamie Foxx’s Oscar-winning performance as Ray himself.
His singing style was among the most emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th century performer, up there with the likes of Elvis and Billie Holiday. He was also a superb keyboard player, arranger, and bandleader. His time at Atlantic (from 1948 to 1961) is rightly considered his best.
